Victim a jeweller, who was living in a room in the main market of the town, was beaten to death by a local man. This matter is of 12 May. There was a dispute between the two on some matter, when the accused started beating the laborer. After beating for a long time, the accused left him half-dead. The family members of the artisan were not present at the time of the incident.
In an injured condition, the victim was brought to Samba District Hospital, where the doctor after first aid referred him to GMC Jammu for better treatment. The victim died there on Monday. Doctors kept him on ventilator for 48 hours, but he died at 10 am on Monday. He has been identified as Chandrakant Laxman Khopkar, a resident of Sangli, Maharashtra. The police have arrested the accused.
According to the information, Chandrakant used to live in Samba town with a room for many years. Here he used to prepare gold and silver ornaments by taking orders from goldsmiths. From this he used to take care of his family. He is survived by his wife, two daughters and a four-year-old son. The victim's wife, pleading for justice from the police, has demanded the strictest action against the accused.
At the same time, after conducting the post-mortem of the dead body at GMC Jammu, the police handed it over to the family for the last rites. The victim's family took Chandrakant's body to their village in Maharashtra, where they would perform the last rites. Police have started further investigation by registering a case against the accused under sections 323, 341 and 302 of the IPC.
Samba's SSP Samba Benam Tosh has constituted a special investigation team to probe the matter. He said that a team headed by a DSP rank officer would complete the probe to probe the matter in depth. Under the chairmanship of DSP Garuram Bhardwaj, Samba police station in-charge Rajeshwar Singh, PSI Davinder Singh and ASI Manzoor Hussain have been included in this team.
